The political incorrectness and lack of sensitivity here can be simply astounding some times.
The Banyumas Regency administration in Central Java has come under fire for forcing the region’s rice-for-the-poor (raskin) subsidy recipients to make it absolutely clear to the world that they are indeed poor.
The sticker in the photo above reads, “I am truly from a poor family that deserves to receive raskin.” Recipients of the raskin program in Banyumas are required to put up the sticker in front of their homes in order to receive the subsidy.
Needless to say, the demeaning sticker was not received well by the public.
Local legislator Yoga Sugama said he appreciated the administration taking initiative to ensure that raskin is given to all those who need it, but he regretted the choice of words in the sticker.
“It should’ve been enough to write ‘raskin recipient’. There’s no need for a clarification like that,” he said, as quoted by Detik yesterday.
Sugiyanto, head of Banyumas Regency’s Economy Department, said the idea for the sticker, including the words, came from Banyumas Regent Achmad Husein. He said the administration is unable to recall the stickers as 124,422 of them have been printed and distributed to the region’s raskin recipients.
