In the latest case of a traffic accident involving a child of the rich and powerful, the police say they’re going to press charges against Raka Widyarma, the adopted son of Banten Governor and former TV star Rano Karno, for his involvement in a multiple car crash.
But how this case will play out in court is another matter entirely.
Raka was suspected of reckless driving when he crashed his Honda HR-V into a Blue Bird taxi and a motorcycle while he was trying to overtake other vehicles on Jalan Perimeter Utara Bandara Soekarno Hatta on Wednesday morning.
Raka and the other two drivers reportedly received injuries from the crash.
The police say that Raka could be charged with a 2-year prison sentence.
“Because of recklessness that caused injuries [to others],” said Commissioner M. Salim Margie, head of the Traffic Unit for the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police, as quoted by Tempo today.
Raka is reportedly still in the hospital receiving treatment of his injuries, but he is expected to be called upon by the police for questioning soon.
Of course, we wouldn’t be surprised if he manages to escape any sort of punishment in the end, given that he’s legally related to a governor and all. Just last year, the heir to a wealthy real estate family was sentenced to just a 2-year probation for killing 4 people in a car rampage. Similarly, wannabe Jakarta governor Ahmad Dhani’s son, and the son of former candidate for vice president Hatta Rajasa, both inexplicably escaped any punishment even after being clearly at fault for deadly car crashes.
