Following Jakarta’s decision to declare Uber illegal and have police impound 18 of the service’s partner cars as a warning, Bandung’s mayor, Ridwan Kamil, declared the private car hailing service prohibited in his city as well.
Ridwan actually acknowledged that Uber had provided a good service for his city’s citizens, especially after public surveys showed that Uber gave people access to taxis in parts of the city that lacked transport options. But that was not enough to overcome regulatory concerns.
Although it has been banned until now Uber continue to operate in the city of Bandung.
“From an economic perspective, they are useful, but from a legal perspective they are prohibited. So I am declaring that it is forbidden for (Uber) to register legally,” Ridwan said, as quoted by Tempo.
Specifically, Ridwan said that Uber was in violation of transportation laws that required both taxis and private vehicles for hire to provide passenger insurance and yellow license plates indicating their status.
“If Uber want to operate legally and be incorporated, it has to have passenger insurance and clear yellow license plate numbers,” Ridwan said as quoted by Vivanews.
Ridwan said that if Uber could meet regulatory requirements, then they would be able to operate once again in Paris von Java. But until then, he said Bandung Police would crack down on their operations.
