#BalikinKTPGue: Netizens ask for their IDs back after Ahok decides against independent run in 2017 election

The news that Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama is choosing to accept political party support instead of running as an independent in the 2017 election surely disappointed many of his fans. That disappointment seems to be reflected in a trending topic on social media today.

The hashtag #BalikinKTPGue (#ReturnMyKTP) is, at the time of writing, the top Twitter trending topic in Jakarta. The hashtag alludes to how political group Teman Ahok (Friends of Ahok) gathered over 1 million Jakarta ID cards (KTP) in support of Ahok’s independent run, which some apparently feel was a pointless exercise after Ahok chose the political party route.

While many tweets that include the hashtag were random and unrelated to the topic (such as tweets from Twitter bots), there were those who expressed genuine disappointment with Ahok.

It’s only the beginning and @basuki_btp (Ahok) has already gone back on a promise, he’s already disappointed, what about later? Where’s Teman Ahok’s voice?

An example of a leader who speaks but lies.

I lost a figure who was firm and brave.

Meanwhile, Teman Ahok tweeted yesterday that they are actually in support of Ahok’s decision, because their goal is to see Ahok re-elected, no matter the means.

Teman Ahok fully supports the decision. We’re sure it was a tough decision and full of risks, and it was taken after the consideration of many things. #TetapAhok (#StillWithAhok)

Teman Ahok will still fight until Ahok is reelected as governor in 2017.

Do you think Ahok is going to lose many voters as a result of his decision?
