Bakrie’s Epiwalk mall closed down because he hasn’t been paying its property taxes since 2013

To help spread some cheer before the holidays, the Taxation Department of of South Jakarta spent today cracking down on delinquent property taxpayers in the Kuningan area of South Jakarta. One of the buildings that hasn’t been paying up is the Epicentrum Walk mall (better known as Epiwalk), which is managed by the Bakrie Group and has unpaid property taxes to the tune of about Rp 8.8 billion

Several members of the Setiabudi Police, municipal police officers, and officers from the South Jakarta Tax Office came to close the mall and seal it off from the public earlier today. The building’s management made no attempt to resist the officers.

Ruswan Sugeng, head of the South Jakarta Tax office, said it was forced to seal the mall because the shopping center’s management did not respond to his office’s warnings.

“We’ve reminded them repeatedly, (but) they continue to ignore us,” Sugeng told reporters in front of Epiwalk on Tuesday afternoon, as quoted by Kompas.

Sugeng said property tax payments have not been made by PT Bakrie Swasakti since 2013. The exact total the company owes the government is Rp 8,835,348,225.

According to Sugeng, PT Bakrie Swasakti has been given a deadline of next week to pay up. If they remain in arrears, the government will send a letter of forced collection. If they still do not pay up within a specified time limit, the government will start seizing the company’s assets.
