Baby on board: Woman gives birth to baby boy on TransJakarta bus

Almost a month after a woman was forced to give birth in a car after being stuck in traffic, Jakarta has seen the birth of yet another baby born in a vehicle, this time on a TransJakarta bus.

Just before noon yesterday, Siti Mariama, who was in the late stages of her pregnancy, boarded a TransJakarta bus going from Pinang Ranti to Pluit with her husband and two children. Her water broke just as the bus reached a bus stop.

To the credit of the TransJakarta employees, they quickly led the other passengers into another bus so that Siti could be driven directly to nearby Sumber Waras Hospital. However, 15 minutes into the drive, Siti gave birth to a healthy baby boy, with her husband delivering the baby.

“In the history of the TransJakarta, this is the first time a baby was born on board a bus,” said Prasetia Budi, TransJakarta spokesman, as quoted by Metro TV yesterday.

We don’t know the baby’s name yet, but we think the middle name “T.J.” would suit him well.
