Authorities arrest Australian and New Zealander in South Jakarta chiropractic clinic raid

The Jakarta Health Agency continued its crackdown on illegally operated medical clinics in the capital yesterday afternoon by raiding a Chiropractic Indonesia clinic in Rukan Permata Senayan, Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta.

With the help of Jakarta Metro Police and Immigration officers, the agency forced the closure of the clinic, which it said had been operating without the appropriate permits.

Immigration officers also nabbed two foreigners – thought to be chiropractors at the clinic – for working as medical professionals in Indonesia without a license.

The foreigners were reported to be an Australian and a New Zealander.

The authorities didn’t hesitate to arrest them as the Health Ministry recently announced that there currently are no registered foreign medical professionals working in Indonesia.

“There were two foreign doctors, so of course we arrested them because foreign medical professionals have no legality in Indonesia,” said Maria Margreta, head of the Health Services Department for the Jakarta Health Agency, as quoted by Warta Kota.

The death of Allya Siska Nadya last year, which authorities suspect was caused by malpractice committed by American chiropractor Randall Cafferty, was the spark that drove various government health agencies and the police into cracking down on medical clinics and foreign medical professionals who they now say are working illegally in Indonesia.
