Not Bali for once but Aceh, of all the places to go on a butt-naked drunken rampage in Indonesia.
The culprit, according to reports by Australian media outlets, is a Queenslander by the name of Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones, 23.
Risby-Jones recently arrived in the ultra conservative province of Aceh for a surfing trip with a friend. He was arrested after embarking on a naked and violent alcohol-induced rampage in the early hours of Thursday on the island of Simeulue, leading to his subsequent arrest by local authorities.
According to the police, Risby-Jones had been drinking vodka in his room before he emerged in a state of complete undress just after midnight.
“He got out of his room naked. The security man attempted to stop him but got hit in the neck and fell down,” Simeulue Police Chief Jatmiko said, as quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald.
“He then went onto the street and disturbed passers-by. He hit almost everyone who was on the street.”
Risby-Jones also allegedly struck a passing motorcyclist and threw the motorcycle onto him after he fell into the gutter. The motorcyclist required 50 stitches in his leg after he was transferred to a hospital in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh due to limited medical facilities in Simeulue.
“Knowing it, the people got angry and almost put the resort on fire. Luckily, local police and the village head managed to calm down the mob.”
Risby-Jones has been charged with assault that caused serious bodily harm, which is punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment under the Criminal Code (KUHP).
Aceh is the only province in Indonesia with special autonomy to enact Islamic sharia law. As such, Risby-Jones may also face punishment for alcohol consumption, which ordinarily comes in the form of public flogging.
