The American Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia (Amcham) is urging the Indonesian justice system to evaluate the 10-year jail sentences to Canadian national Neil Bentleman and Indonesian national Ferdinand Tjiong, who received guilty verdicts at the South Jakarta District Court in the Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS, formerly Jakarta International School) child sexual abuse case.

Amcham believes the guilty verdict could potentially have a negative effect on foreign investment in Indonesia.

“We advise that the court could rethink this case and to carry out a transparent judicial process by consistently using the evidence collected,” wrote Amcham Indonesia Representative Mary Silaban in a press release as quoted by Vivanews today.

“The injustice in this case could have serious consequences on Indonesia’s ability to draw foreign investment that Indonesia needs to grow [its economy].”

Amcham also predicts that this case would drive foreign teachers, such as those at JIS, away from Indonesia.
