ALERT: Government agency predicts heavy rain over next two days, possible weeklong floods

Yesterday’s heavy rains were one of the hardest we’ve seen so far this rainy season, causing flooding in a number of points throughout the city. But that might be nothing compared to what’s coming tomorrow and Wednesday.

The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) has predicted that we’re going to see even more rainfall over the coming days, which could potentially cause serious flooding throughout the capital.

“We must be cautious of the potential for rain on February 16th and 17th, when heavy rain is predicted to fall on Bogor, Depok, and Jakarta,” said Sutrisno, head of BPPT’s Weather Modification Department, as quoted by Detik yesterday, adding that the rainfall and waters from upstream could be enough to cause the capital’s rivers to overflow.

“Looking at the high potential for rain in Jabodetabek, people must, for at least the coming week, brace themselves for the potential of flooding in order to minimize damages.”

BPPT’s prediction is in line with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG)’s forecast of heavy rain until at least Wednesday in Jakarta, with torrential rains possibly starting as early as this afternoon.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) yesterday recorded 17 flood points throughout Jakarta, including in Kemang, Mampang, and Cililitan. The Cikampek-Jakarta toll road, which is the main access point for vehicles coming from Bandung, was also flooded heavily.
