Many were shocked to learn that former Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama had decided to withdraw the appeal his lawyer’s had submitted over his blasphemy conviction and 2-year prison sentence. Previously, his lawyers had conveyed that Ahok was worried about getting a heavier sentence from the Jakarta High Court and that his decision was to show his respect to Muslims.

Earlier this morning, Ahok’s wife, Veronica Tan, read a letter from the former governor at a press conference explaining in his own words why he has decided not to appeal his conviction and accept his fate.

Veronica, known for her usually calm and poised demeanor in public, became emotional and cried at some points while reading her husband’s words.

“To all of my volunteers and supporters, to all those who have undertaken the democratic process, wherever they may be.

I have been thinking a lot about what has happened to me. I want to thank my brothers and sisters who continue to support me in prayer, sending food, greeting cards, letters, books, even by gathering candles.

I know it’s not easy for you to accept this fact, nor is it for me. But I have learned to forgive and accept all this, for the good of our country and our nation.”

Ahok also conveyed that he was worried about his supporters and volunteers continuing to hold protests as it could cause more problems and clashes with the other side. Nevertheless, he thanked them for their orderly rallies and candlelight vigils.

His letter ended on a spiritual note:

“Let us show that we believe God is sovereign and in control of every nation’s history. We show that we are people who believe in God Almighty who loves his people, who will surely uphold truth and justice for all people.

Gusti Ora Sare (God Never Sleeps}.  I place my hope in the Lord now and always, Psalm 131, verse 3. As for my faith, I say The Lord will work out his plan for my life, Psalm 138 verse 8a.”

Veronica said her family agreed with Ahok’s decision and that they would support him completely as he completed his sentence.

Although Ahok’s legal team withdrew his appeal, the prosecution’s appeal, which was submitted last week, has not. It is not yet clear if Ahok’s side has requested that that appeal also be withdrawn.
