Despite prohibitions against it, there are still people smoking indoor, including in shopping malls. One woman even started a petition last week to get the government’s to pay attention this odorous fact after she and her baby were told to move tables to accommodate a smoker in an indoor café.
The petition succeeded in getting Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s attention. He said the government will do more to make sure people don’t smoke in prohibited areas.
“I will send people to monitor malls in Jakarta. If there are people smoking indoors [the undercover] agents will record [the offense for evidence]. Then the mall will be given a heavy punishment in the form of having their commercial license revoked,” Ahok said today, as quoted by Metro TV.
These undercover agents will also monitor CCTV footage in malls to catch any offenders.
Jakarta Gubernatorial Regulation No. 88 in 2010 clearly states that smoking in public spaces, including inside of malls, is prohibited. People are only allowed to smoke in designated smoking rooms. Businesses that violate this regulation may have their license revoked.
