Ahok says he’ll sue workers if they damage Jakarta property on May Day

Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has pulled some strings, like turning Friday into a Car Free Day, to make sure that May Day, or International Workers Day, celebrations can go smoothly tomorrow. Now, he expects the thousands of workers to show the same kind of respect to the city.

More than 75,000 workers are planning a series of protests and celebrations during May Day. They will converge at the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout in the morning before marching to protest at the State Palace. Eventually, they will march South to the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan to celebrate May Day, where they’ll be treated to a concert.

With so many workers due to swarm the streets of Jakarta, Ahok is wary that they could cause damage to Jakarta’s public facilities.

“If there are damages, we’ll sue them,” Ahok said at City Hall today, as quoted by Vivanews

Ahok also hopes that the workers won’t litter tomorrow. But, workers or not, we’re willing to bet Jakarta’s streets will be full of litter by the end of the May Day.
