Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” followed through with his plan to reappoint around 2,000 city officials in the hopes of creating a better, more efficient Provincial Government. The mass appointment was carried out at the National Monument (Monas) this morning.
And to everyone’s surprise, Governor Ahok took the opportunity to carry out a mass drug test.
Ahok directed the newly appointed Echelon II and Echelon III city officials to sit under a large tent just as people thought the ceremony was nearing its end.
“We are conducting a drug test, ladies and gentlemen. Please do not leave,” Ahok announced, as quoted by Kompas today.
Ahok said all ranked city officials have to be drug-free to set an example for their subordinates.
“Ladies and gentlemen please do not attempt to run away. There will be people from the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) who will assist you. Let’s rid the Jakarta Provincial Government of drug users,” Ahok said.
Ali Johardi, head of the BNN in Jakarta, explained that they are conducting a urine test for city officials today. He warned city officials to come clean about any drug use before the test was conducted.
“Ladies and gentlemen, once you receive your urine sample cups, please head to the toilets we provided. Our medical staff will carry out inspections. We’re prioritizing male city officials because today’s Friday so their time is limited because of the Friday prayers,” Ali said.
It’s not yet known what punishment will be given to city officials who test positive for drug use.
