An artist’s rendering of how the Casablnca flyover was originally supposed to connect with a network of toll roads
Those of you who must travel along Jalan Casablanca know that the road seems to be in a perpetual state of traffic jam, especially the stretch directly in front of Mall Kota Kasablanka. This is despite the fact that the city built a very long and expensive flyover connecting Casablanca and Tanah Abang, which seems to have actually made the traffic worse.
Current Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Purnama Tjahaja accused former Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo of poor planning while constructing the Casablanca-Tanah Abang flyover which has created the current macet mess.
Ahok said the flyover is causing the traffic because it is not fulfilling its original goal. Originally, the flyover was supposed to connect to a larger network of six toll roads going throughout the city (see mockup above).
“Why did the Casablanca flyover remain a corridor instead of connecting with six toll roads in the city? Because maybe I think the old governor thought ‘I will be reviled if I build six toll roads through the city,’” Ahok said at City Hall today as quoted by Kompas.
“Because of the old governor’s silence long ago, now everything is falling apart, the roads are so bad,” Ahok said again. When asked, he confirmed he was talking about Fauzi Bowo, who was governor of Jakarta before Ahok and before current President Joko Widodo was the governor of Jakarta.
