Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama apologized to the people of Jakarta for the unsatisfactory Transjakarta bus service for the past few days.

Ever since a brand new bus suddenly caught on fire on Jalan Gatot Subroto last Sunday, the Provincial Government has grounded 30 of the same Zhongtong manufactured buses from China.

With a depleted fleet, the Transjakarta service has struggled to transport passengers efficiently.

Ahok said they have to be more selective in buying buses for the Transjakarta in the future.

“I’m not anti Chinese-manufactured buses, but please buy good Chinese buses like the Foton, which is well-known. New manufacturers are unproven; so don’t try out their buses here. Maybe they’re good for one or two years, but what are we going to do when they become faulty afterwards?” Ahok said, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.

The Transjakarta is expecting to receive a boost to its fleet in the form of 20 Scania buses from Sweden in June.
