After rampage by illegal vendors, security heightened at Monas hawker center

The June 20th assault on the National Monument by a mob of angry evicted street vendors (watch the video above to see how crazy that was) left the recently opened Lenggang Jakarta hawker center in shambles, with many of the stalls destroyed, windows broken and offices ransacked during the rampage.

But the Jakarta Government is not backing down from its initiative to make Lenggang Jakarta the only official place for vendors to operate in Monas. They have now stepped up security around the hawker center in case a similar incident arises in the future.

“Since the assault case, we have been working with and coordinating with the police and Brimob also [to increase security],” Lenggang Jakarta head of Maintenance, Marjali, told Vivanews yesterday.

He explained that additional security personnel had already been stationed at certain areas around Lenggang to prevent another attack.

Apparently some of the damage from the June 20th attack still remains. Lenggang Jakarta’s office area is still in disrepair, with windows and office equipment including a printer and LCD screen badly damaged.

Marjali said that repairs were slow due to budget and time limitation. But he said that none of Lenggang’s traders had been scared away and all were ready to continue operating out of the hawker center.
