The long-awaited Formula E race in Jakarta, which had been delayed due to COVID-19, is among the city’s priority programs for next year, an official document shows.
Governor Anies Baswedan recently issued a Gubernatorial Instruction (Ingub) ordering 28 delayed priority programs to be carried out this year and next year with the hope that the COVID-19 crisis would be manageable by then.
One of those programs is the city’s debut for hosting a Formula E race, which has now been targeted for June 2022.
In 2019, Governor Anies secured Jakarta the right to host one Formula E race each year for the next five years. The National Monument (Monas) was chosen to host what was supposed to be the country’ first electric-powered car race due to its iconic landmark status, and the planned racing track was going to be built within the area as well as on Medan Merdeka Selatan street.
The first Jakarta race was scheduled for June 6, 2020, but the event was postponed amid rising coronavirus cases in the capital and throughout Indonesia.
The race was postponed again in 2021 due to the country’s COVID-19 crisis.
Race organizers have released a tentative schedule for the 2021/2022 season — the eighth for Formula E. As of this article’s publication, Jakarta is not included in the schedule, though there is still an open slot for June 4, 2022.
