Jopi Peranginangin, who was known as an activist for various political and environmental causes, died after a group of unidentified men physically assaulted and stabbed him at Venue Bar and Lounge in Kemang, South Jakarta, early Saturday morning.

Jopi was fatally wounded from the attack and couldn’t be saved after he was taken to the Centra Pertamina Hospital (RSPP) in Kebayoran Baru. The identities of his assailants, as well as the motive behind his murder, are not yet known.

In the world of politics, Jopi was part of the National Democratic League of University Students (LMND) during the 1998 democratic reforms. He also volunteered on Jokowi’s presidential campaign last year.

Environmentally, Jopi was active in WALHI (The Indonesian Forum for Environment) and Sawit Watch (Palm Oil Watch).

He was supposed to get married next month.

“A few days ago he told me that he was really happy that he bought a house in Cikeas, if I’m not mistaken. He also said he wants to get married next month,” said Jopi’s friend Ulin Yusron, as quoted by Kompas on Saturday.
