Even though President Joko Widodo left the post of Jakarta governor vacant, Vice Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has not officially stepped up to the role of governor yet. But Ahok claimed he doesn’t care whether he’s acting governor or not; he just wants to get to work.
“They’re just different names [acting governor and governor]. The salary [for acting governor] is only Rp 1 million less than governor. I can still work. The function and responsibilities are the same,” said Ahok at Jakarta City Hall today.
Always a man to put actual work ahead of politics, Ahok also claimed he’s paying no attention to rumors about who would replace him as vice-governor when he officially steps up to become governor.
“Even an acting governor has deputies. I have four deputy governors under me now,” said Ahok.
The deputy governors Ahok mentioned are four people who head four main departments within the Jakarta city government. Allegedly, Ahok often spoke of one of his deputies, Sarwo Handayani, as an ideal candidate to succeed him as vice governor when the time comes.
