After being named a suspect in a legal document forgery case, Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Chief Abraham Samad is expected to step down from his position soon. His press conference last night seemed like his last as the head of the KPK.
“I think [stepping down] is the standard for all KPK leaders [who are involved in a criminal case] and there’s no problem with that,” Abraham said at the press conference in the KPK building, as quoted by Liputan 6.
“My last message is, I’m asking all of my brothers and sisters whom I love, all of the mass media and all Indonesians from Sabang to Merauke, let’s all realize what’s happening with this case.
“Hopefully Allah almighty sheds some light for all of us to see the truth, even though the truth can only be found in darkness.”
Abraham did not hold back in stating that the criminal case brought against him undoubtedly has to do with the KPK indicting National Police Chief candidate Budi Gunawan as a corruption suspect.
“Maybe we can’t directly say that is the case but it is undeniable that all of KPK’s leaders were reported to the police and are to be investigated by the police because we named BG (Budi Gunawan) a suspect,” he said.
Abraham Samad and his legal team are now preparing to defend the criminal case brought against the KPK chief.
According to Article 32 of Law no 30 in 2002 regarding the KPK, a KPK leader who is indicted as a suspect in a criminal case is required to step down temporarily from their position. But Article 3 says the President of the Republic of Indonesia is required to approve the resignation of a KPK leader before it takes effect.
So as things stand, Abraham Samad is still chief of the KPK until Jokowi says he can quit.
