An earthquake registering 6.5 on the Richter scale shook Jakarta and its neighboring provinces this morning, though it thankfully hardly caused a panic in the capital.
“An earthquake with the magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale shook some areas on the Northern part of Banten, West Java, and Jakarta. BMKG (The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency) reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was on the Java Sea,” National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho wrote in a statement today, as picked up by Okezone.
The earthquake occurred at 7:25 WIB. Thankfully, it did not have enough power to generate a tsunami.
Sutopo added that the tremors, which lasted for 58 seconds, were weak and could hardly be noticed by people on the ground.
“Citizens of Jakarta who live in high rise buildings and apartments reported that they felt stronger tremors. There have been no reports of loss of life or damage to buildings. We predict there was none,” he wrote.
Sutopo did not say whether or not there could be aftershocks following the earthquake.
