The Jakarta Metro Police has arrested five suspects in the brutal death of an 89-year-old man in East Jakarta on Sunday.
The suspects, aged 18 to 23, were among at least a dozen youths who rode their motorcycles to chase the octogenarian victim in his car at 2am. They eventually pulled the victim out of his car and beat him to his death.
“The five suspects are those who have confessed, and have been proven to commit the act of violence because they were provoked,” Jakarta Metro Police spokesman Endra Zulfan said during a press conference today.
Zulfan added that the police are pursuing more possible suspects as footage of the incident showed more had chased and beaten the victim that morning.
The five suspects have each been charged with assault that led to death under the Criminal Code (KUHP), which is punishable by up to 12 years in prison.
Based on video footage, the motorcyclists chased the victim under the false pretense that he had stolen the car. Police later confirmed that the victim was actually driving his own car, and that the suspects chased him because he had scraped his vehicle against a motorcyclist.
