45-year-old motorcycle thief shot while trying to flee police in Kalideres

There’s no doubt that being a motorcycle thief is one of the most dangerous occupations in Jakarta at the moment. Even if you don’t get caught in the act and beaten to death by an angry mob, judging from recent news stories, it seems like you have a good chance of getting shot by the police while trying to escape the law.

That’s what happened on Monday in Kalideres, West Jakarta, when police shot when motorcycle thief in the knee and foot while trying to arrest him and his two partners in crime.

Media reports noted that bullet-riddled thief, a 45-year-old man Sutrisno, was crying even after police arrested him. (We’re pretty sure we’d be crying too if somebody shot us in the knee or foot, let alone both.)

Sutrisno and his fellow thieves, Chandra Irawan (21) and Rahmat Arifin (23) were caught after their neighbors tipped off the police to the gangs illegal activities. They caught the three of them at a rented house on Jalan Prepedan in Kalideres.

“This gang has been in action since December 2014. They stole motorcycles in a matter of seconds,” said Kalideres Police Chief Darmawan Karosekali as quoted by Koran Sindo (which also has a brutal police photo of the three criminals, Sutrisno lying on the ground because he presumably can’t stand on his bullet-riddle leg).

Police seized keys, four motorcycles and two suspected fake vehicle registration licenses as evidence from the house.
