Thirty-four people required medical care after a massive fire engulfed parts of Trans Studio Mall in Makassar, South Sulawesi on Monday evening.
Viral footage shows mall-goers running towards exits as the flame quickly spreads inside the facility – a popular shopping and family leisure destination in the city.
According to mall management, the fire broke out at approximately 6:15pm on April 24 with the likely cause being an electric short circuit near an oft-frequented photogenic spot on the mall’s second floor.
Firefighters managed to put out the blaze by 8:45pm. The majority of victims reportedly required medical treatment for respiratory problems.
The mall is reopening today with the public able to access areas that were unaffected by the fire. The affected parts of the mall will likely be reopened in late May following repairs.
South Sulawesi Police has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
