3 arrested for trying to smuggle American marijuana into Indonesia inside a box of LEGOS

Trying to smuggle any kind of drug into Indonesia, even one as benign as marijuana, is an incredibly dangerous game. Perhaps the two men arrested at Jakarta’s Halim Perdanakusuma Airport last week thought they could lighten their crime up by hiding their stash inside a box of LEGOS, but everything is definitely not awesome for them now.

According to customs officials at the airport, the two men, identified as AMM (31) and JAY (20) were caught trying to send a package containing 258 grams of dried marijuana leaves from the United States last Thursday

Halim custom official Chairul Saleh said the smuggling attempt was revealed when a package was scanned and the box of plastic bricks showed an anomaly.

“We x-ray every package, suspicious or not. But after we analysed [the LEGO box] we noticed shapes that were not like LEGOS so then we did a physical exam,” Chairul said yesterday as quoted by Tribunnews

Chairul said that when the box was opened, 13 plastic containers of marijuana were found hidden amongst the toys. The leaves were tested and proven to be cannabis.

After some investigation, police also nabbed one other suspect, a 16-year-old who they believe was the intended recipient of the drugs. The investigation is ongoing so police have not yet announced what charges the suspects will face.
