A driver and a passenger were killed when a TransJakarta bus rear-ended another in Cawang, East Jakarta, police said, while 37 others were reportedly injured in the crash.
The incident occurred at around 9am on Jalan MT Haryono, with the two buses colliding on the TransJakarta-exclusive Busway lane.
“We’re going to look into whether this was the result of human error. In other words, it could be that the driver was sleepy or not focused,” Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Department Chief Sambodo Purnomo Yogo said today.
Authorities have not ruled out possible brake failure in the incident either.
The impact between the two buses was understood to have been considerably strong that the vehicle that crashed from the rear saw its front completely destroyed. The driver of said bus was believed to have been instantly killed from the impact.
It’s not yet known which bus the deceased passenger had boarded.
Police said the 37 wounded passengers suffered injuries of varying degrees and have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
