Buzzfeed, Internet lord of the viral listicle, came out with two such lists recently regarding Indonesia. However, they each tell a very different story about our country.
Both listicles come from Buzzfeed France associate editor Marie Telling. The first list, published on Feb 19, is titled “35 Gorgeous Pictures Of Indonesia That Will Take Your Breath Away” and has the subheading “So beautiful it’s unfair to the rest of the world.”

The second listicle, published on Feb 21, is titled, “17 Pictures That Prove Indonesia Is Actually The Craziest.” You might be asking yourself, “Indonesia is the craziest… what?” It seems the definition of “craziest” she’s going for is “full of crazy dangerous animals.” The article’s subheading is, “Forget about Australia — Indonesia has actual dragons! You can’t beat that.”
The list is filled with pictures of snakes, spiders, giant lizards and even spiders eating lizards:
So if we combine the message of both listicles, it seems like the overall takeaway is Indonesia is a gorgeous, crazy, breathtaking, dangerous country. Which, actually, seems just about right.
It seems a bit odd, Buzzfeed putting so much focus on little ol’ Indonesia in such a short amount of time. Could it have anything to do with Buzzfeed International Vice President Scott Lamb being in Jakarta for Social Media Week this week? Could Buzzfeed perhaps be planning to conquer Indonesia’s fertile social media landscape next? (They did recently launch Buzzfeed India, after all.)
With nothing to rely on but our own baseless speculation, we’re gonna say… mehaps?
