Two boys in Indonesia got a taste of the pocong life (or death, as it were) after their attempt to emulate a ghostly prank they saw on social media went terribly wrong.
According to reports, on Friday night of all nights, the two boys from the city of Depok, West Java, dressed up as pocongs — zombie-like ghosts wrapped up from head to toe with white cloth, as is customary in Islam, with only their faces uncovered — to spook residents of their neighborhood.
But it appears the boys, whose ages were not revealed, did not do enough in the costume or makeup departments to conceal their identities as somebody from their neighborhood immediately noticed who they were and informed others.
“The locals secured them and the boys admitted to have been influenced by what they saw on Instagram. They say they often watched silly videos, so they made themselves up to look like pocongs and appeared on a field,” neighborhood head Arsyad told Tribun yesterday.
Arsyad also said that locals could only think of one fitting punishment for the boys.
“The locals punished them by making them sleep in a graveyard near Gelora field. They were told to sleep there until their parents came to pick them up. They are still little, so we did not do anything else,” he said.
Photos of the boys’ capture and their punishment has gone viral online, with local news aggregator account @infodepok_id among those posting the photos on Instagram.
In addition to the graveyard punishment, Arsyad said the boys have been scolded by their parents, who have decided to limit their mobile phone use (which is probably a more terrifying punishment for kids these days).
