Law enforcement officers in East Jakarta raided several boarding homes in the city last night to make sure that the rooms weren’t being used by unwed couples to have a good time.
The operation wasn’t carried out in vain – authorities arrested 17 unwed couples overnight who were caught getting intimate in their rooms.
East Jakarta Mayor Bambang Musyawardhana said the city is carrying out this operation to instill public discipline and to review permits for boarding homes.
“This is to discipline accommodations, especially since nowadays many boarding homes are turned into places for negative [acts],” Bambang said, as quoted by Warta Kota today.
The 17 arrested couples were taken in for questioning. It’s likely that all of them will escape with warnings.
Of course, we’ve often heard about authorities raiding boarding homes and cheap hotels to arrest unwed couples who sleep together. But we’ve never heard of the police raiding high-class hotels where the same thing obviously happens as well. Surely, those who can only afford cheap accommodation have just as much right to a good time as those in high-class hotels.
Maybe consenting adults should be free to sleep with whoever they want in their own private space?
