While we’re certainly not the biggest fans of Cinta Laura (or the fake foreign accent she used to become a mainstay of Indonesian pop culture), this story we just read about her represents a new low for Indonesian celebrity gossip news (which we didn’t think could get any lower).
Cinta left Indonesia in 2011 to study at Columbia University in the US and graduated in 2014. Since then, she’s apparently been focused on breaking into the world of Hollywood.
There have been some stories lately about how hard it’s been for Cinta to make it through the brutal world of Hollywood castings and auditions, something she has openly talked about with the local media.
Apparently these stories fueled completely unsubstantiated rumors that her inability to get cast in Hollywood has made her consider suicide.
Yesterday, celebrity gossip site Kapanlagi published a story titled “Gagal Casting di Hollywood, Cinta Laura Ingin Bunuh Diri?” (Failed to be Cast in Hollywood, Cinta Laura Wants to Kill Herself?) in which a reporter had the cruel audacity to ask the young actress if the rumors were true.
No doubt shocked by such a horrible question, Cinta replied that it was completely untrue and that she had no other comment.
There’s definitely a segment of Indonesians that want to see local celebrities who try to go international fail, as if they want them to know their “rightful” place. Even those who do find success abroad, like Agnez Mo and Anggun, get heavily criticized by certain Indonesians, supposedly for “betraying Indonesian values” but perhaps for other, more petty reasons.
But to ask a young woman about rumors she wants to to commit suicide? That is disgusting, cruel and just plain wrong.
