WATCH: Action star Iko Uwais kicks alien ass to defend Prambanan Temple in new ‘Beyond Skyline’ trailer

Indonesian action movie star Iko Uwais has come a long way since his days of being a driver at a mobile phone company. Since he was tapped by director Gareth Evans to star in his first silat action extravaganza, Merantau, he has gone on to wow audiences in The Raid and its sequel and made an appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Pretty soon, you’ll be able to see him battle Southeast Asia’s other great action star, Tony Jaa, in the upcoming Triple Threat as well as battle aliens (once again) in Beyond Skyline.

A sequel to the 2010 film Skyline about an alien invasion of Earth, Beyond Skyline actually takes place concurrently with the events of the first film and features another perspective on the invasion, namely that of Mark (played by Frank Grillo, who you might recognize from Captain America: Winter Soldier, Warrior or the later Purge films), a detective whose child is one of many people snatched up by the aliens at the beginning of the invasion.

It’s not entirely clear from the above trailer but it appears Mark somehow ends up in Indonesia, where he meets up with Iko Uwais’ character, Sua, and his band of warriors, who recruit Grillo’s grizzled detective into joining their fight  to defend Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta (not sure if it’s that exactly in the film, but they definitely filmed some of it on location there) from the alien forces

One of Sua’s warriors is his co-star and fellow silat stunt master from The Raid films, Yayan Ruhian, who plays a character who is simply called “The Chief”

Reactions to the new trailer have been positive, with movie news website Slashfilm saying “The Sequel to That Awful 2010 Movie Looks Surprisingly Not Awful” (Let’s just say the original Skyline was not exactly beloved by critics).

Well, we can safely say that we are looking forward to seeing Iko and Yayan beating the shit out of some aliens silat-style when Beyond Skyline is released later this year.
