Chris Hemsworth with director Michael Mann, standing in front of the Irian Barat Statue in Jakarta
Last summer, all the Indonesian celebrity news sites were abuzz with news that Chris Hemsworth (best known as the mighty Thor from “The Avengers”) was in Jakarta shooting a movie with famed director Michael Mann called “Cyber.”
Hemsworth was spotted shopping at Plaza Senayan, where he graciously took photos with fans. Hemsworth is apparently a big Indonesia fan, having studied the language in high school (you can hear him speak a few words of Indonesian in this video from the Wall Street Journal).
The movie, which has since been renamed “Blackhat,” is due to hit theaters in 2015, but the trailer for the slick-looking cyber thriller is already out. The plot, according to the official synopsis: “A furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.”
We’re not sure we buy the huge, athletic Hemsworth as a super-hacker, but he’s gotten quite a bit of praise from director Michael Mann, who has helmed some fantastic movies such as “Heat.” So we have high hopes for the film and its portrayal of Jakarta.
At the very least, it’s got to be better than “Java Heat.”
