We’re so used to seeing famous tourist landmarks replicated in Indonesia, so how about a bit of Indonesia in another country?

Yes, such a thing does exist, as shown in a TikTok video that recently made its rounds on social media. The video, posted by TikTok user @rapuncila, shows a replica of what appears to be a typical Indonesian kampung (village).

“Can you guess if it’s in Indonesia or not?” @rapuncila asked at the beginning of the video.

@rapuncila then proceeded to highlight several things found in this mini kampung, such as a warung that sells household goods, a store that sells “oleh-oleh khas Lampung” (souvenirs from Lampung province), a cell phone store that sells phone credit, gerobak (street carts) of mie ayam bakso and kupat tahu, and a motorcycle workshop. Towards the end of the video, there’s a gate with the large sign saying “Taman Nasional Way Kambas” (Way Kambas National Park).

“This is in Sydney, Australia. The place is made to look a lot like the Way Kambas National Park,” the caption at the end reads.

The replica of a village near the Way Kambas National Park is located at Taronga Zoo in Sydney, which was built to give the visitors an experience of Indonesia before seeing the Sumatran tiger exhibit at the zoo. Though the kampung replica has been around since 2017, it appears that most Indonesian netizens were not aware of it prior to this TikTok video.

The Way Kambas National Park in Lampung is a conservation site of Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus). It’s one of the two conservation sites in the form of a national park in Lampung, the other one being Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park. Other than Sumatran elephants, other animals living within the national park include tapirs, Sumatran rhinos, Sumatran tigers, and sun bears.

For years, Taronga Zoo has sent veterinarians to Way Kambas to conduct medical procedures on their rhinos, as well as providing tourist guide training to local residents. Located on the shores of Sydney Harbour, Taronga Zoo is the largest zoo in Australia with a site that spans over 28 hectares. It’s home to over 4,000 animals from 350 species.
