For some (i.e. super dedicated “alay”s), the urge to take a selfie simply can’t be contained regardless of whether the time and place for it are appropriate or not.
Dangdut star Saipul Jamil, who is suspected of molesting an underage 17-year-old fan earlier this year, made sure he kept with the times by taking this selfie before his court hearing on Monday at the North Jakarta District Court, of all places.
According to Tribun, Saiful borrowed a journalist’s phone and asked for permission from the prosecution to take a selfie with his defense attorneys. Well, at the very least, the people in the background of the selfie are Saipul’s own lawyers – it would’ve been even more inappropriate if the prosecution or the judges partook in the selfie while looking like star-struck fans as well.
Nevertheless, Saipul’s face in the selfie radiates calm, especially for someone who could be sentenced with 15 years in prison for child molestation (or chemical castration if the government passes the new law allowing it in time). Was Saipul trying to show that he’s confident he’ll escape punishment for his crime?
But a more accurate explanation is probably that Saipul Jamil suffers from acute selfie-itis. One needs to just glimpse at his Instagram account to see how serious it is.
