While most Indonesians are familiar with a variety of dance styles, from dangdut and hip hop to traditional and breakdance, we doubt most Jakartans have had a chance to experience true classical ballet here (besides perhaps watching “Black Swan” on DVD).
If you have any interest in that most elegant dance art, you’re in luck. This Saturday you can check out one of the biggest ballet exhibitions ever staged in Jakarta at the first Indonesian Ballet Gala, taking place at the Ciputra Artpreneur theater.
The gala will feature many of Indonesia’s top ballerinas and danseurs, including representatives of Ballet Sumber Cipta, Marlupi Dance Academy and Namarina Youth Dance. They will share the stage with world-class ballet dancers from the Korean National Ballet as well as award-winning ballet stars from Australia and the Czech Republic.
The night will feature a wide variety of performances featuring excerpts from classical ballet shows such as “Swan Lake” as well as original modern choreography incorporating elements of Indonesian traditional dance.
