Being a photojournalist is a unique calling. On top of all of the technical and artistic skills needed to be a good photographer, a photojournalist must also have that drive to capture that which is authentic and honest, a drive that pushes them to take whatever risks are necessary to capture those moments of truth.
And when they get that shot that they have been after, the results can be truly awe-inspiring.

Every year, the world’s best photojournalists submit their best work to the The World Press Photo competition, considered the profession’s leading contest. The 2014 competition drew entries from 5,692 photographers who submitted 97,912 images for consideration. Out of those, a panel of esteemed judges will give out 45 prizes in eight themed categories.

Starting Saturday, February 20, the World Press Photo Exhibition will bring all of those award-winning photos to Jakarta’s Erasmus Huis for the final stop on the exhibition’s 100-city world tour. The exhibition will run until March 12.
This year, the World Press Photo exhibition also has an interactive element, enabling visitors to use their smartphones to access background background information about the images and the photographers simply tapping their phones against the panel.
