Still from Studio Ghibli’s “The Tale of The Princess Kaguya”
Fans of Far Eastern Cinema know that Japan produces some of the most visionary, violent and visually dazzling movies in the world. Japanophiles and fellow otaku can get a taste of some of the best that Japanese cinema has to offer from Nov 26 through Dec 1 thanks to the Japanese Film Festival at the Blitz CGV multiplex in Grand Indonesia.
The festival is being organized by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the country’s embassy in Jakarta, the Japan Foundation, the Japan Image Council and Hellomotion. Over 6 days, they will be 30 film screenings from the Land of the Rising Sun, including a selection of award-winning live action and animated films.
We’re particularly excited about the opening film, 2014’s “A Samurai Chronicle”, which was created in part as a loving homage to the works of Akira Kurosawa, often described as Japan’s greatest director.
Fans of Japanese anime will definitely want to check out “The Tale of The Princess Kaguya”, a film from the legendary Studio Ghibli (producers of “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Spirited Away”) that utilizes a breathtaking animation style to tell a classic Japanese folktale. If you need further convincing, it’s one of the very few films in history to score a perfect 100% on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes!
Some of the other standout films on the festival lineup include “The Kirishima Thing”, “The Pearls Of The Stone Man”, “Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo” and “Giovanni’s Island”.
Tickets to all of the full-length feature films are available for just Rp 20,000. There will also be special screenings of live-action and animated short films that are completely free to the public!
