Surabaya-based photographer Hendy Wicaksono is one of the most renowned in his trade in Indonesia, having been hired to capture momentous occasions by some of the highest profile politicians and celebrities in the country.
But, undoubtedly to the disappointment of many well-to-do future married couples, Hendy says he has stopped taking pre-wedding and engagement photos because of a religious calling, as announced in this recent Instagram post.
The 32-year-old spoke to Kumparan yesterday to explain his decision, which was sparked by the death of his good friend in May.
“I asked myself if I can take responsibility for what I do in this life. After that incident (his friend’s death), I brought myself closer to religion, I learned more about Islam. I learned that the pre-wedding shoots that I did are a big sin and I must stay away from it,” Hendy said, as quoted by Kumparan.
“I realized that in Islam men and women who aren’t yet halal (married) aren’t allowed to touch each other, which is haram (forbidden). The couples (in pre-wedding shoots) often hold hands, hug, and even kiss. As a photographer I used to enable those activities, which automatically makes me a sinner.”
Hendy added that while he has stopped taking orders for pre-wedding shoots, he honored previous contractual obligations — the last of which was in August. He’s still available to take wedding photos as physical interaction between married men and women does not violate any Islamic teachings.
Many are praising the photographer for staying true to his religious principles despite the risk of lowering his income.
“Hopefully God blesses you in other ways. We are proud of you,” wrote a commenter on his post above.
