Australian artist Amy Smart and Indonesian artist Entang Wiharso are both considered among the vanguard of the contemporary arts scene in their respective countries. After meeting in Melbourne in 2012, the two became close friends and that friendship eventually led them to create a uniquely collaborative exhibition, “Conversation: Endless Acts in Human History,” which is currently being hosted at Jakarta’s Galeri Nasional Indonesia until February 1.

Smart is considered one of Australia’s most significant contemporary artists, well known for her work in large cut-out assemblage installations as well as her use of performance and video elements. Entang gained international recognition after his work was exhibited at the Indonesian pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005.

“Sally and I share many interests and certain ideas come up in both our works in different ways, for example the body and organs, borders and frontiers, history, colonization, the art scene and art politics. And we both use cutting as a conceptual act in our practice,” Entang told the University of Melbourne’s Pursuit magazine.
