The police arrested singer Fariz Rustam Munaf, popularly known as Fariz RM, on Tuesday for illegal drug consumption in his home in Bintaro, South Tangerang. The arrest happened just one day after Fariz celebrated his 56th birthday.
The police say the musician was really enjoying plucking away at his guitar when they arrested him.
“The suspect was in the middle room playing a guitar. He was playing the guitar while smoking marijuana,” said Hando Wibowo, head of the Narcotics Crime Unit at the South Jakarta Police, as quoted by Warta Kota yesterday.
Fariz RM’s wife, Oneng Diana Riyadini, was also at home at the time of the arrest.
“During the arrest, Fariz was in the front section of the house, his wife was inside [in another room] and was not using drugs. There were two witnesses outside,” Hando said.
Fariz then tested positive for marijuana, heroin, and methamphetamines after a urine test was conducted at police headquarters. The police also confiscated a bong, marijuana, and heroin from his home.
Fariz could now face a minimum of four years and a maximum of 12 years in jail.
Fariz RM, who reached the pinnacle of his fame in the ‘80s, is most well-known for his timeless classics Barcelona and Sakura.
