Indonesian singer-songwriter NIKI just dropped the first single off her upcoming album, Nicole.
Titled Before, the song was inspired by NIKI’s past relationship, which unfortunately ended without closure.
“Before is the irresolute ending to my very first love story. I wrote it as a means to create the kind of closure I never had,” NIKI said in a statement.
While the story behind the song is heartbreaking, NIKI said she’s proud of it and feels that Before is the most fitting song to introduce her upcoming album.
“I also feel it’s ironically poetic to open this new chapter by telling you how it ends first. I’m so proud of it, and I can’t think of a better song to introduce the ultimate break-up record I’ve always fantasized of putting out but somehow haven’t… until now.”
The music video for Before is directed by Isaac Ravishankara and features Indonesian-American actor Peter Adrian Sudarso as NIKI’s ex.
In a post prior to the release of Before, NIKI announced that her sophomore album, Nicole, will drop this coming August. The album, which is named after her real name Nicole Zefanya, is a follow-up to her 2020 debut studio album, Moonchild.
In the post, she recounted her story prior to signing to her current label as NIKI, including the beginning of her musical career by posting her original songs on her YouTube channel nzee24, which she said was the birthplace of her artistry.
Coming as a surprise to her fans, more especially the long-time ones, NIKI said that she has been pulling a Taylor’s Version by rerecording and reimagining a number of her old songs. The album will be divided into two parts, with the first half featuring both new and archived songs that no one has ever heard before, while the second part will feature her personal favorite original songs that were previously featured on the nzee24 channel.
“This project is without a doubt my most favorite thing I have ever made as an artist. It’s where younger me and current me meet and hang and have a fucking blast together,” NIKI wrote.
