Great news for movie fans in Bekasi! A new IMAX theater just opened up in the Summarecon XXI in Summarecon Mal Bekasi last weekend, bringing film goers in the satellite city the massive screen, higher resolution images and superior sound quality of the IMAX experience, just as summer movie season is kicking off.
The new IMAX in Bekasi is the fourth such screen in Indonesia. Cinema XXI, the theater chain that owns all of the IMAX cinemas in Indo said that they had plans to continue the super-sized silver screen expansion.
“In addition to those in Jakarta, we also want to develop the area around Greater Jakarta. Because we see the population density is quite high in areas such as Jakarta and Serpong,” says Catherine Keng, corporate secretary at Cinema 21, as quoted by Muvila.
Catherine said the next IMAX will likely open in Surabaya and that the company has plans to build 10 more throughout the country over the next few years.
And in news that should make all Indonesian movie fans excited, a regional IMAX rep attending the opening at Summarecon XXI said we may begin to see local films shown in IMAX once enough screens are available.
“We could take local blockbuster movies here and convert them into the IMAX format. Maybe after we have opened roughly 10 theaters here, it would make economic sense for us to make IMAX versions of local films,” said Don Savant, IMAX’s managing director for Southeast Asia.
The first modern IMAX theater opened in Indonesia is located in Gandaria City mall. That was followed by openings in Kelapa Gading Mall and and Summarecon Serpong in South Tangerang last year.
Dare we dream of a future where “The Raid 3” is shown in the proper IMAX glory it deserves? Yes, we dare.
