When it comes to Jakarta, the first image that pops into many people’s minds are traffic choked streets jam-packed with cars and motorcycles. But once a year, during the Lebaran holiday period when millions of Jakartans make the mudik journey back to their hometowns for Idul Fitri, the capital becomes a very different place and the exceedingly rare sight of empty roads becomes irresistible to a certain type of Instagrammer.
As has happened in previous years, this year’s Lebaran saw the hashtag #JakartaSepi (#LonelyJakarta) become a viral hit, but Instagrammers really took their game up a notch in 2018 by showcasing Jakarta’s empty streets in new and ridiculous ways (often with the aid of props).
With the holiday period now officially over and millions of people returning to Jakarta this week, let’s take one last longing look back at the lonely Lebaran roads before our streets are overrun by macet madness once again.
