If you’re looking for a festive New Year’s Eve celebration on the road (literally), Jenderal Sudirman and MH Thamrin — the stretch of major roads that make up the main thoroughfare in Jakarta’s commercial district — will be open exclusively for NYE revellers on Car Free Night.
Like with the weekly Car Free Day every Sunday, the two roads will be closed to motor vehicles. The police say vehicles will be prohibited from 5 pm until the end of NYE celebrations the next day. Those who wish to drive to the area can park their cars or motorbikes at IRTI Square at the National Monument (Monas), Banteng Square, Istiqlal Mosque, Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, and buildings along Sudirman-Thamrin — keep in mind to come earlier to avoid bad traffic.

Those who plan to drive near or around Car Free Night should keep these traffic diversions in mind:
The new year celebration along Sudirman-Thamrin will feature entertainment stages and culinary stands, as well as a mass wedding and prayers for tsunami victims.
