Jakarta is set to host the Indonesia World Stamp Championship on Aug. 2-10, which will bring more festivity to the country’s 77th Independence Day celebration on Aug. 17.
According to member of House of Parliament (DPR) Fadli Zon, who’s also the chairman of the Indonesia Philatelic Association, delegates from at least 65 countries will be attending the event, which will take place at Hall C JIExpo Kemayoran, North Jakarta. The event is organized by the association and Pos Indonesia.
“We hope that this World Stamp Championship and Exhibition can also improve the creative economy, education. This is an international exhibition of stamps and philatelic objects. Because [the event] is still going on in various countries,” Fadli said after a meeting with Vice Governor Ahmad Riza Patria at City Hall to discuss the event last night.
According to Fadli, Jakarta hosted the same event 10 years ago. He hopes the event will educate the public about stamps from various countries including lessons about their history, and he believes that philately can still exist in the modern world.
“The more digital [the system is], people can no longer hold those digital objects. There are material objects such as stamps that are 100-200 years old from various countries.”
Additionally, Fadli was awarded a gold medal in the Postal History class at the World Stamp Exhibition London 2022 in February for his collection, The Netherlands Indies Postal Cancellation 1789-1914.
