The twin suicide bombings that took place around Jakarta’s Kampung Melayu bus station on May 24 were harrowing reminders of how vulnerable we all are to senseless acts of violence. But, even though this was the second major act of terrorism in the Indonesian capital in less than 1.5 years, Jakartans have, by-and-large, refused to let terror and fear dictate how they live their lives.
That enduring spirit of resilience is one of the things that Jakartans like to pride themselves on, and it’s this spirit that is beautifully displayed in these works, created by five local street artists, showcasing their reactions to this most recent terrorist act.

The street artists were commissioned by Micro Galleries, an art collective that “reclaims disused and forgotten spaces and reactivates them as tiny galleries that are free and accessible to the local community.” The “Reclaim: Jakarta” commissions are part of an upcoming Micro Galleries exhibition in Jakarta from October 6-21.
