Some of us refuse to put up photos of our children on social media to avoid this particular risk.
23-year-old dangdut star Ayu Ting Ting was outraged when Instagram photos of her baby girl, Bilqis, was used by internet trolls to create ads that purportedly showed that her baby was for sale. The ads, presumably a joke, were uploaded to Instagram some time ago.
Ayu plans to report the trolls to the police at some point today.
“If I were bullied [on the internet], it’s ok. But this involves Bilqis so I can’t [ignore it]. I have to teach the culprits a lesson,” Ayu said yesterday, as quoted by Kompas.
It wasn’t clear if Ayu or authorities know the identities of the trolls.
The practice of selling babies online is supposedly a real problem in Indonesia. But the National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) admitted that it is difficult to expose illegal activities that are coordinated online.
Let this be a lesson to all parents. Yes, sometimes we can’t help but take snaps of our little ones during their most adorable moments. But perhaps it would be much safer to keep the photos in the family’s private album.
