Indonesia’s satay-inspired national costume skewers the competition at Miss Grand International pageant

There are no limits when it comes to inspiration for fashion, so it can certainly come from a dish that one can find practically anywhere across Indonesia — just like the satay-inspired outfit that beauty queen Aurra Kharishma will wear at Miss Grand International’s national costume competition tonight. There are no limits when it comes to inspiration for fashion, so it can certainly come from a dish that one can find practically anywhere across Indonesia — just like the satay-inspired outfit that beauty queen Aurra Kharishma will wear at Miss Grand International’s national costume competition tonight.

Aurra posted three photos of her wearing the satay costume earlier today, titled The Edacious of Chicken Satay. The first photo shows the variant of the costume with the satay skewers on the grill; while another variation of the costume, a plate of the dish with assortments such as shallots and slices of bird’s eye chili, are shown on the second and third photo.

With Sate Madura being the costume’s theme, referring to a variant of chicken satay from the Madura island in East Java, there are elements of red-and-white shirt with the black outerwear synonymous with the sellers of the dish. It appears that the grill part of the costume can be flipped up to reveal the plate of satay, which makes this outfit even cooler.

Designed and crafted by the team from the famous Jember Fashion Carnaval (JFC), the chicken satay is said to represent Indonesia’s rich food culture and its popularity throughout the country.

The 21-year-old Aurra, who won first place at Miss Grand Indonesia last year, wore the satay costume during her presentation, before jetting off to Bangkok in late February. Since then, Aurra has been in quarantine for various activities leading up to the grand final, which is slated to take place this Saturday.

Born Kharisma Aura Islami, Aurra entered the modeling world at the young age of 14. The Majalengka-born model has walked in shows such as Jakarta Fashion Week, as well as joining various modeling competitions in Indonesia and abroad.

Miss Grand International, which is based in Bangkok, is an international beauty pageant campaigning to “stop the war and violence.” Indonesia has scored multiple awards at Miss Grand International, starting from Ariska Putri Pertiwi, who was awarded Best National Costume and won the competition in 2016; Dea Rizkita, who won Best National Costume in 2017 through an epic Ibu Pertiwi-themed dress, and Nadia Purwoko, who won third place in 2018.
