We may have embarrassingly come fifth overall in the 2015 SEA Games. But where our athletes failed us, one Indonesian beauty came through for her country in a big way.

23-year-old Ayu Gani from Solo, Central Java, became the first Indonesian to win the popular televised beauty pageant ‘Asia’s Next Top Model’ after beating two other finalists from Singapore and the Philippines yesterday.

The show, which just finished its third season, also featured two other Indonesian models, Tahlia Raji and Rani Ramadhany, in the top 14.

In the show’s final episode that aired last night, Ayu spoke of her “long journey” that led her to eventually win the competition.

“I couldn’t even dare to dream about (winning the competition),” she said, as quoted by CNN Indonesia.

Ayu’s prizes for winning the competition include becoming the new face of TRESemmé for one of their 2015 product campaigns, the chance to appear in a spread and the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Singapore, and a modeling contract with Storm Management in London. She also won a brand-spanking new Subaru XV STI.
